INNOVATIVE SOFTWARE ZAP DATA HUB NOW AVAILABLE ACROSS MIDDLE EAST & AFRICA

Africa’s leading technology company, Techno Brain Group has signed a major distribution contract with ZAP, for sales and channel partnerships of its data management and analytics software across Middle East and Africa.

For business leaders who need information fast without IT headaches, Techno Brain will deliver ZAP Data Hub, the best in class pre-packaged data management and analytics software. Azure-based and Azure-accredited, it is optimized for Microsoft Dynamics 365, AX, NAV, and CRM, plus Sage and Salesforce, and is compatible with numerous other ERP, CRM, financial systems and databases.

ZAP Data Hub increases ROI and insight from business intelligence software. Business leaders can analyze data from multiple systems and data sources on one screen – either in Power BI, Tableau or ZAP’s own BI interface which includes pre-built analytics and dashboards.

“ZAP is excited to partner with Techno Brain across Africa and the Middle East,” explains ZAP’s CEO, Garth Laird. “The region has an incredibly diverse ‘data landscape’, which our software makes sense of, allowing multiple data types (from ERP to CRM) from any source (cloud or on-premise) to be connected quickly and easily, delivering Business Intelligence insight that helps businesses grow faster and identify and capitalise on new opportunities quicker than ever before.”

Manoj Shanker, CEO, Techno Brain comments: “One of the hottest trends in BI lately has been self-service data analysis. With ZAP Data Hub we would want businesses in Middle East and Africa to leverage this and connect popular ERPs, accounting software and business solutions with a choice of self-service BI platforms like Power BI, Qlik, and Tableau.”

Saj Abraham, Director of Digital Business and also leading the ZAP partnership indicates that “ZAP Data Hub will help partners deliver quicker time-to-value to their customers on BI projects, leveraging its out-of-the-box connectors with leading business solutions.”

ZAP Data Hub automates data management processes, ETL and data warehouse builds, making it an ‘out-of-the-box’ experience with no need for coding. This signals an end to high-risk, lengthy, expensive and manual data warehousing projects, and the arrival of instant reporting and 360-degree view business intelligence.

Techno Brain partners with Microsoft on Digital Agriculture Platform to help farmers in Africa

Nairobi, Kenya – 14 June 2018: Techno Brain has partnered with Microsoft Corporation to launch a Digital Agriculture Platform in Africa to help farmers improve crop yields and increase income.

Smallholder farmers are the most vulnerable to impacts of climate change, with rain-fed agriculture accounting for more than 90% of farmed land in sub-Saharan Africa. These farmers face many risks beyond their control, including drought, disease and pest epidemics.

The technology solutions being offered by Techno Brain will collate data; farm location using Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates, expected rainfall and weather patterns, land type and soil nutrition, and process the information on intelligent cloud to create insights that help farmers in Africa make better farming decisions.

Microsoft is already working with government and enterprises in India to help farmers with small hold farmlands and dependence on rain-fed agriculture and this partnership is now being extended in Africa.

The pilots are starting in Malawi and Tanzania, in partnership with National Smallholder Farmers Association of Malawi (NASFAM) and ETG Farmers Foundation, respectively.

Farmers will receive insights on mobile via short message service (SMS) and voice platforms; best crops to plant, optimal sowing week, pest growth alerts, adverse weather notices, preferred harvesting time, market information and farming tips developed in collaboration with other knowledge partners and African Governments.

Speaking during the official launch, Anand Mohan, Chief Operations Officer Techno Brain said, “Agriculture is the main stay of African economies but has a lot of untapped potential. Many African smallholder farmers lack access to information and knowledge that would help them maximize agricultural production, and we believe that this platform offered by Techno Brain and Microsoft will empower African smallholder farmers to increase their yields and income significantly.”

Anil Bhansali, Corporate Vice President Cloud + AI Microsoft said “Microsoft’s vision is to use the power of our cloud and AI tools to help solve problems in core and infrastructural areas by enabling innovative and scalable solutions. The partnership with Techno Brain marks an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to help create sustainable livelihoods in Africa, India and rest of the world.”

This partnership between Techno Brain and Microsoft will enable smallholder farmers develop climate and market resilience. This will also enable development of new agribusiness models and make agriculture a viable livelihood for many farmers across the continent. We anticipate that smart and precision agriculture will further attract youth to farming.

Pioneering Africa’s Integration the Digital Way

Techno Brain Group is steadily expanding its efforts across Africa and further afield, building upon local skills with a strategy for success

Writer: Phoebe Calver

Project Manager: Kane Weller

Since its inception in 1997, Techno Brain Group has supported global enterprises and Fortune 100 companies through the provision of leading technology, consulting and outsourcing solutions.

The Company has built its strategy for success over the years around innovation, technology and teamwork, all of which stemmed from the founding idea of Chairman, Mahesh Patel.

In those early days it was highly apparent that Africa required a huge investment into its IT skills, and subsequently the Company created a vision which began with training people on the continent with the required IT skills; beginning in East Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

“We started our work in East Africa, and when I saw how well the young people we had trained were coming on, I realised we needed to work on creating opportunities in which they could utilise these skills,” explains Manoj Shanker, Chief Executive Officer at Techno Brain Group. “Following on from this realisation, I came up with the idea to get our people writing software codes that would solve local problems.”

As Techno Brain began to grow and evolve as a business, the realisation came that the major opportunities available were in the public sector. For example, the Government required automation and public financial systems, as well as identification systems.

“There were opportunities for us to fill the gap left by larger companies in the industry, where they were lacking a credible IT company to run operations,” continues Shanker. “It has been a long journey during the past 20 years, but we are incredibly proud of the position we are in with our committed staff with thanks to the education, innovation and solutions that have contributed to achieving a shared goal.”

Breaking new ground

The Company’s single-minded focus on innovation has led it to achieve the delivery of groundbreaking solutions across a wide range of sectors, helping enterprises to adapt to the ever-evolving markets and new technological advancements with thanks to strategic consulting.

“Over time we have had to adapt to the changing markets by finding new ground to branch into,” adds Shanker. “Recently we have worked hard on achieving application and enterprise management solutions, as well as advanced technology that includes business intelligence, data warehousing, cloud computing and analytics.”

During the past 10 years in particular, the Company was required to build upon its capabilities in order to attain a position of leadership in the aforementioned sectors and from that its business units were created. These units include financial management, tax and customs, identification business, training, vendor centric products and solutions that have led to focused work with Microsoft and Oracle.

“During 2017 and 2018, the main trends we have been working towards include the creation of a more technically based business,” states Shanker. “We have already started building new small-scale solutions using robotic processes and new artificial intelligence tools and we hope to be the leading digital business using these technologies in Africa.”

Business intelligence

Over the years the Company has built up a solid reputation and track record within business intelligence and data warehousing, with a dedicated team of 30 employees working in the area.

“We have established a pool of talent across the region that currently stands at approximately 1,200 people, as well as our office in London which is aiding us in our move into the UK,” explains Shanker. “As well as our centre of excellence in Kenya, we have also established centres in India and the US.”

“Over the years a lot of people have asked me how we have managed to build such a successful technology company out of Africa, and the reason is due to the understanding of how to best utilise the skills available to us on the continent, which of course has not been an easy job.”

The young Africans in the region have clear aspirations for the future and for their careers, and subsequently Techno Brain has been working hard to meet their requirements through training and providing introductions into the industry that allow for growth.

Shanker adds: “We have been able to achieve successful growth with talent all over the continent to create a solid foundation on which to continue building our Company, having said that, when required we also have an international pool within the family at Techno Brain to utilise.”

With thanks to its excellent employees, the Company has built a reputation for delivering the highest quality in the industry that stems from the adoption of best practices, establishing models and methodologies to follow to the letter and an uncompromising approach to ensuring excellence in delivery.

“Stemming from the aforementioned factors our Quality Management System is a blend of customer driven and process driven practices,” continues Shanker. “We have a dedicated Software Quality Assurance team that focuses on defining the processes and conducting internal quality audits.”

World-class processes

Techno Brain is proudly a completely African company, utilising the African talent available to it locally which proves to be a massive differentiator within the industry. Focusing on IT capabilities that matter the most to African companies, Techno Brain offers advanced experience while innovating indispensable day-to-day solutions to organisations.

“There is a high-tech space within the market today for a company such as ours to compete with the global companies out there,” explains Shanker. “In order to succeed in these challenging conditions, we place a lot of emphasis on quality and compliance, demonstrated in our recent achievement of CMMI Level 5 certification.

“As the only African company out there with that accolade, we are in a unique position and follow the highest standards to deliver the best products and solutions in the country.”

At present the Company is focused on bringing forward world-class processes in order to provide the best possible value, however, looking forward it has its eyes on the prize when it comes to transforming into a truly digital company that works with big data and artificial intelligence, as well as many other facets.

Shanker adds: “We’ve been Africa’s leading custom software application provider for 20 years, and as a CMMI Level 5 Company we have an unsurpassed experience and knowledge of providing, deploying, commissioning, training and maintaining large engagements all over the world for Governments, NGOs and the private sector.”

Techno Brain continues to steadily expand, servicing customers in 33 countries with an employee count of more than 1,200, spread out across Africa, India, UAE, UK and US.

“We are also branching into new regions and hope to see more territorial expansion into more of the French speaking countries that we are yet to branch into,” concludes Shanker. “In the next five years Techno Brain will be one of the leading regional digital players expanding our innovations, product range, employees and footprint on every continent.”

Techno Brain To Begin Drivers License/Vehicle Registration & National Identity Projects in Liberia

London – When Bill Gates’ Microsoft was looking to launch the first ever testing and quality assurance center in Africa, it turned to Techno Brain, based in Nairobi, Kenya. The Microsoft testing and quality assurance center, the fourth such centers of its kind in the world, was launched on May 2, 2018 and is housed at Techno Brain’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

Now, venturing in Liberia, the company, Techno Brain, which also specializes in digital identity management with end-to-end passport and border control systems solutions in the continent, recently won the bid to implement the National Identification and Vehicle Registration / Drivers License Projects in Liberia.

Mr. Manoj Shanker, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, is hoping that the Liberian operations will lay the ground work for improving identification technology in a nation still lagging behind the rest of the world and lacking the global standards and recognition that a company like Techno Brain can deliver. He sees a bright future for the training of youth and the formation of linkages to attract global companies.

For Shanker, the goal is to create ”Made in Africa” solutions that promote self-sustenance, social empowerment, long term economic stability and sustainability, showing that Africans can compete on the global stage.

Techno Brain’s vision, according to Shanker is aligned with his passion to empower lives in Africa through technology. And one area where Techno has had some successes is in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector, which has been dominated by India, the Philippines and other countries in Asia. “We now have 600 people in this business and we are in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Malawi addressing many markets. We have clients such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Walmart and are proving that Africans can handle and manage effectively BPO at lower costs,” the CEO avers.

Besides conducting digital indexing work for Google and image processing for Facebook, the company is also embarking on major initiatives in West Africa, including Nigeria and expanding into Mauritius and Angola while expanding its pedigree through its operations in the United States and acquiring the global tax and customs business of Crown Agents in the United Kingdom.

Additionally, Techno Brain is also engaged in helping global enterprises, including Fortune 100 companies, by providing leading technology, consulting, and outsourcing solutions. “Since our inception in 1997, we have built our strategy around innovation, technology, and teamwork”, Shanker revealed.

Techno Brain has long standing and strong relationships with the likes of the Rockefeller Foundation, Microsoft, IBM, Facebook, Google and many global partners that rely on BPO services as a major part of their business strategies.

For Liberia, Mr. Shanker is hoping that Techno Brain in partnership with the government can establish an IT Center of Excellence in Liberia as a catalyst to jump start the IT industry in Liberia. This is an ideal proposition for a country whose close proximity to the US, Canada and England with compatible “time zones” and language (English) is ideally suited to attract a significant part of the BPO business that emanate from these 3 countries.

Last October, the Liberian government dedicated the country’s first National Biometric Identification System (NBIS), setting the stage for a transformative program that in effect changes the way government deals with private businesses and complement development efforts in national security, immigration, elections, financial services and government service deliveries.

The government and Techno Brain signed a US$ 5.9 million contract in April 11, 2017, to be implemented over the next three years.

Techno Brain, was selected through an international competitive bidding process that involved nineteen reputable and experienced companies. Under the contract, the National Identification Registry will set up a new biometric civil registry that will issue the first one million ID Cards, including 50,000 ECOWAS standard cards.

In Liberia, the overall goal is to register more than 4.5 million Liberians – who will obtain the citizen ID cards, and legal residents in the country.

Mr. Tiah Nagbe, Executive Director of the National Identification Registry, said recently, that the new ID card system will be a prerequisite for a number of day-to-day activities including opening bank accounts, voter registration and SIM card registration.

“If you don’t have the biometric ID card you cannot use your SIM card, the ID card will be required to do your SIM registration. You will also use it to open your bank account, do your voter registration, obtain a driver’s license among others,” Nagbe added.

Last month, Mr. Nagbe was the featured guest speaker at the 4th Annual “ID4Africa” forum in Abuja, Nigeria highlighting the successful launch of the Liberia National biometric ID card project. Although Biometric ID projects in Africa have been very difficult and challenging for many countries to implement successfully, Mr. Nagbe is confident of the Liberian project’s success, through its partnership with Techno Brain.

Mr. Shanker contends that Techno Brain has done well in excelling and proving that Africa can cater to its own governmental technology needs. “The public sector spends a lot of money in automation and it needs transformation with technology that will change the lives of the people it serves,” he added.

Last month, Boston Consulting Group, BCG, highlighted Techno Brain as one of 75 indigenous companies pioneering economic integration on the continent.

Techno Brain’s Integrated Financial Management System, IFMIS, deployed in Uganda, has been recognized by the World Bank as being “the best project of its kind in the world”, helping to keep track of and monitor local government spending. In Ethiopia, the company is implementing the largest IFMIS project in Africa including training 7500 public sector employees across 125 public agencies.

The success of Techno Brain was evident and on display in Nairobi last week as Kenya stands to benefited from Techno Brain’s emergence as a global IT player with the launch of a testing center for highly skilled engineering, quality assurance and testing work in Africa. Mr. Shanker is also confident that Liberia, too, can benefit tremendously from technology and he sees great hope for its youthful population.

Techno Brain e-cargo tracking system lauded in Zimbabwe

Duty on truck cargo imports soars. . . as smuggling, transit fraud tumble

By Golden Sibanda

Harare — IMPORT duty paying entries into Zimbabwe have risen by 25 percent while transit cargo has plunged 62 percent since the introduction of the electronic cargo tracking system in May this year, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority has said.

This signifies that there was massive existence of fake transit entries relating to goods destined for the local market, with potential revenue prejudice of several millions of dollars to the country.

Zimra, the country’s revenue collecting agency, said the electronic cargo tracking system had resulted in improved compliance in terms of transit cargo, as trucks are tracked in real time up to the point of exit.

The system has also resulted in a substantial number of cases being dealt with, which in turn has acted as deterrence to potential perpetrators of transit fraud.

“After the introduction of the system, there was a decrease in transit cargo by 62 percent and an increase in duty paying entries by 25 per cent,” said Zimra in e-mailed responses from Business Weekly.n

Zimra commissioned the Electronic Cargo Tracking System on May 15 aimed at curbing smuggling and transit fraud.

Zimra said the average number of transit cargo per month before the introduction of the electronic cargo tracking system stood at 9 000 entries.

Misrepresentation is high for goods subject to import restrictions and higher rates of duty, such as fuel and goods covered by Statutory Instrument 64 of 2016 and indications are that importers would be trying to evade the import restrictions and paying duties and taxes.
Customs duty accounted for 8,39 percent of gross collections of $3,462 billion in 2016, about 96 percent of the targeted $3,607 billion. Estimates say Government collects 30 percent of its revenue from ports of entry.

The $1,2 million electronic cargo tracking system was purchased as part of a capacity building programme under a public and economic management project being financed by the African Development Bank.

Prior to the electronic tracking system cases of transit fraud were common amid reports that many trucks were eluding duties and taxes by falsely claiming to be on transit and off-loading imports in the country.

It is believed that hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of products were finding their way onto the domestic market without paying taxes as importers were falsely claiming that goods are on transit.

Zimbabwe is a transit hub, catering for northbound and southbound transit traffic through its ports of entry and exit.

The country is a gateway to East and Southern African countries and it serves Zambia, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo, among other countries. This creates huge risk for commission of transit cargo fraud.

The electronic cargo tracking system involves the use of electronic sealing devices, which are put on transit cargo at Zimbabwe’s ports of entry.

Further, the system uses geo-fencing technology and is supported by Google Maps to ensure the accuracy of location and movement of transit cargo, as the cargo is monitored in real time up to the point of exit.

As such, the electronic sealing devices send an alarm to the system’s control room at Zimra head offices in Harare on any violations, which include seal tampering, seal opening and incidents of geo-fence violations.

The system has also been integrated into Zimra’s existing Customs clearance system, the Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA).
